What goes into building a new brick wall in Ventura?
Brick wall installation in Ventura, CA means building a new brick and mortar wall on a solid footing, for a garden edge, a privacy wall or a wall around a patio. A well-built brick wall holds its own color and resists rain, so it doesn't need paint to look good.
Most people who call us already have a spot in mind, maybe where a tired wood fence stands or along the edge of a patio, and they want something that won't need redoing in a few years. The price mostly comes down to how long and tall the wall runs, how thick it is and how many piers it needs, the brick you pick, and whether an old fence or wall has to come out first. The schedule turns on whether the wall needs a city permit and review, and on how much digging the footing takes. If the wall has to hold back a slope, that's a different build, and our retaining wall construction page covers it. After I've seen your spot, the written estimate lays out what we'd do and why.
How do you know it's time for a brick wall?
Fence posts going soft
If your wood fence leans or the posts feel soft at the ground, the wood has started to rot where it meets the dirt. Waiting usually means patching boards year after year until the whole run has to be replaced anyway.
An old wall cracking or leaning
A crack that runs through the bricks, or a wall that tips out at the top, usually means the footing has moved or the wall never had enough support along its length. The longer it leans, the closer it gets to coming down, and the fewer old bricks are worth saving.
A yard open to the street
If cars, neighbors or the dog can see or wander straight into your yard, a solid wall gives you privacy and a clear edge to the lot. Planning it before you redo the planting saves tearing up new landscaping later to make room for a footing.
How we handle brick wall installation
I start by helping you pick a shape that's strong and looks right for the spot, like adding piers, the thicker brick columns tied into the wall, along a long run. Then our crew marks the line, digs out and pours the footing, and lays the brick course by course in mortar, checking that it stays straight and level as it goes up. We finish the top with a cap so water doesn't sit in the top row, tool the joints neat and clean up the site before we leave. We usually suggest leaving the brick unpainted, because once it's painted you're stuck repainting it down the road.
A brick wall often sits next to other work. Some people want a stone cap, a stone base or a stone wall instead, and our stone masonry work covers that. Once a wall has some years on it, brick pointing, where we rake out worn mortar and press in fresh, keeps the joints tight.
Low garden or planter wall
This suits a yard that needs an edge around beds or a seat-height wall by the lawn. It's short enough that the shape can stay simple, so it's usually the easiest wall to fit into a yard.
Privacy or property line wall
This suits a lot where you want to block the view from the street or a neighbor. It runs taller and longer, so this is where piers along the run matter most and where we check lot lines and permits first.
Patio or entry wall
This suits a wall that frames a patio, a front walk or an entry, where people see it up close every day. The brick color and the joint finish carry the whole look, so it's worth picking both with care.

What happens when you call about a brick wall in Ventura?
From your first call to the last walk along the finished wall, here's who does what and what you get at each step.
Call or send the form
Call (805) 507-9163 or send the form, and tell us roughly how long and tall you want the wall and where it goes. We'll set a time for me to come out.
Walk the spot with me
I look at the spot with you and answer your questions before I write anything up. You get a written estimate that says what we'd do and why, so you can see what goes into the price before you decide.
Line up permits and start
Once you're ready, we line up any permits and set a start date. If the wall needs a city permit, the city's building office reviews the plans before it issues one, so that review comes before any digging.
Build, check and walk through
I run the job on site and check the work as the wall goes up. At the end I walk the finished wall with you.
Why Ventura homeowners call A&B Ventura Concrete and Masonry for brick walls
I see every wall myself
I come out to look at every job myself, and while our crew of experienced masons builds it, I'm on site running it and checking it as it goes. The person who planned your wall is the one making sure it goes up that way.
Fully licensed and insured
We're fully licensed and insured. A wall goes up right along your lot line and close to your house, so you want the crew building it covered.
In business since 2021
We've been in business since 2021, and I came to masonry from running a landscaping business, then learned the trade under an older mason. That background means I plan the wall around the yard, not just the brick.
We check your title report first
Ventura's permit checklist tells owners to check their title report for easement restrictions, so we go over yours with you before the wall gets marked out. An easement is far easier to work around on paper than after the footing is poured.
On a brick wall, the shape and the footing decide how it holds up, so we settle those before anything else. Send us your wall plans and I'll set a time to come out.
Brick wall permits and lot checks in Ventura
Ventura's Building and Safety office issues permits for block walls 4 feet and higher from the bottom of the footing, and its checklist names block walls, not brick walls. That list doesn't settle whether your brick wall needs a permit, so we don't treat it as settled. Because the height counts from the bottom of the footing, a wall that stands a little under 4 feet above the ground can still measure over it. When a job needs a permit, we handle the application and set up the inspections, and if it isn't clear, we ask the city before we start.
Two more points on the city's checklist can change a wall job. If you live in Pierpont or the Ventura Keys, the city asks you to check with its Planning office early, and if part of the job holds back soil, a retaining wall might need a grading permit, which the Land Development Department can answer questions about. We're based in Ventura and work in the cities around it, building the same kinds of garden and privacy walls in Oxnard and Thousand Oaks, where we check with that city's office first.
Questions about brick walls in Ventura
How much does it cost to build a brick wall in Ventura?
A brick wall is priced on its length and height first, then on how much footing and support it needs, the brick you choose and any old fence or wall that has to come out. A low, straight wall with easy access costs less than a tall wall with piers in a tight side yard, because height adds footing, brick and labor all at once. You get your own number in the written estimate after I've seen the spot.
How do I apply for a wall permit in Ventura?
You need a Ventura OPS account, short for Online Permit Services, before you or your contractor can apply for a permit online. When we handle the permit for your wall, we file the application, so you don't have to learn the system.
Who is allowed to build a masonry wall in California?
California's contractor licensing board says a masonry wall built for its looks needs a landscaping contractor or a C-29 masonry contractor. So it's worth asking which license a contractor carries before they bid on your wall.
Do I need to paint a new brick wall?
No, clay brick doesn't need paint or any surface treatment to hold up. Most paint authorities agree that painted outdoor masonry needs repainting every three to five years, so paint adds a chore that keeps coming back. Some people still paint a wall to bounce more light around a patio or entry, or just for the look.
What is the best way to keep a long brick wall from leaning?
Give the wall extra support along its length or a shape that braces itself. UK brick guidance says thinner brick walls can only be so slender before they lose stability against sideways forces, and it names a thicker base, projecting piers or a zigzag or staggered layout as ways around that. Which one fits depends on how the wall should look in your yard, and we sort that out with you at the estimate.
How do I schedule a city inspection for my wall in Ventura?
Get the request in by the business day before, because the city has to receive inspection requests a business day ahead. The office is closed on Fridays, so for a Monday inspection the request goes in by 5:00 PM Thursday. We time the request so the crew is ready when the inspector shows up.
Other masonry work that goes with a brick wall
Stone masonry
Pick stone when you want a wall or wall cap with a rougher, natural face, or when you're matching stonework that's already on your house.
Brick pointing
Once a brick wall has stood for years, the mortar between bricks wears first, and fresh mortar packed in keeps water out and the wall solid.
